Matthew Flinders: Australia explorer’s remains found in HS2 dig

Archaeologists working for HS2 in the former cemetery that is St James Gardens have found the remains of explorer Captain Matthew Flinders. Flinders is a household name in Australia, most famous for being the first person to sail around the continent.

Interestingly, Matthew Finders’ grandson was the noted archaeologist Sir Flinders Petrie, who excavated many sites in Egypt and Israel between 1880 and 1940.

Update: Community Meeting on 22 January location has changed.
