Did you know: Gospel Oak

Did you know that there actually was a famous oak tree in Gospel Oak?

The tree stood as a local landmark for hundreds of years, near the corner of present-day Mansfield Road and Southampton Road. Gospel readings were made under it, and it is said that during the 1700s John Wesley (founder of the Methodist Church) used to preach under it.

Unfortunately there is no record of the tree after the early 1800s – whether it died, was blown over in a storm, or was a victim of encroaching London, we don’t know.
