01 November is All Saints Day, also known as All Hallows Day, which is dedicated to all Christian saints, whether known or unknown. It is also used as a day to remember the dead.

Black History Month

The theme of this year’s Black History Month is Saluting Our Sisters.

One of the Victoria-era pioneers was Mary Seacole, who trained in traditional medicine in Jamaica, and later ran a hotel from 1855 to 1856 in the Crimea during the Crimean War, serving the British soldiers and other people with food, lodging and medical care.

Although Mary Seacole was in the Crimea at the same time as Florence Nightingale, they did not work together. However, they were aware of each other’s work, and are now often regarded as the creators of modern nursing.

Mary Seacole has a statue to her outside St Thomas’ Hospital, and has two wards named after her at the Whittington Hospital. She also has a Blue Plaque dedicated to her in Soho Square.

October is Black History Month

October is Black History Month, celebrating the contribution to Britiain of people of African and Caribbean descent.

The theme this year is Saluting Our Sisters, focusing on the contributions of black women.

A Blue Plaque is being unveiled today in Vauxhall to celebrate Claudia Jones, who was one of the driving forces behind starting the Notting Hill Carnival.

The first Carnival actually took place in St Pancras Town Hall in 1959 (now Camden Town Hall on Judd Street), before later moving to Notting Hill.

A meeting room in the Camden Town Hall is named after Claudia Jones.
