Eid Mubarak!

Today is the start of Eid al-Adha, one of the biggest festivals in the Islamic year.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail. At the last moment, Allah provided a ram to be sacrificed instead. A similar story occurs in the Jewish and Christian religions.

Muslims attend special Eid prayers today, wearing new clothes or their best clothes.

Families get together and traditionally kill a goat or sheep, keeping part of the meat for the family, and giving the rest of the meat to the poor. Families and friends gather and eat, and give presents.

Eid al-Adha also forms an important part of the ceremonies that take place in Mecca during the Haj.

So wish your Muslim friends and neighbours Eid Mubarak!
